Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in several interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
